Girls Write Now is a nationally award-winning nonprofit and New York’s first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls. The organization pairs underserved teen girls with professional women writers in high impact mentoring relationships—girls learn to share their stories through poetry, memoir, and multimedia narratives.

NONPROFIT BENEFITS: Encore-stage board members are inspiring role models

MayaNMaya Nussbaum, Executive Director

Girls Write Now’s encore-stage board members have impressive backgrounds as ground-breaking feminists, activists, journalists, editors and leaders-at-large. These are women who embody the principles Girls Write Now seeks to instill in its participants: dedication to craft, determination to portray the lives of women and girls with honesty and brilliance and commitment to fearless story-telling. “Their careers and accomplishments are an inspiration to the girls we serve, our staff and their fellow board members,” says founder and executive director Maya Nussbaum.

ENCORE IMPACT: Leadership, expert guidance raise GWN profile

Those board members have contributed in many ways: chairing committees (board development, marketing and publicity): connecting the organization with high-profile authors and speakers; securing media coverage and advising on a range of issues.

Maya commented, “If you’re lucky enough to have an encore-stage candidate who wants to share years of wisdom, experience and contacts, strongly consider diversifying your board and deepening the experience for all involved.”
